I have just set up a Fess server. I have it working fine for web crawling. I’m trying to get it to work on a file server. The file server is sharing files through a samba domain. I have set up file authentication with the user and password and the domain listed in the parameters box. I don’t have any results after running the job. How can I tell if it is authenticating correctly?
To see whether authentication is working, start with the crawler log, fess-crawler.log. It is in /var/log/fess/ for RPM/DEB installs and in logs/ under the Fess directory for ZIP installs. Open it after running the crawl job and look for errors such as Access is denied, Logon failure or STATUS_LOGON_FAILURE for your smb:// path.
If there are no errors, or too little detail, raise the log level to DEBUG and run the crawl again.
- Set FESS_LOG_LEVEL=debug (it defaults to warn) and restart Fess. On Windows, edit -Dfess.log.level= in fess.in.bat instead.
- Run the Default Crawler job again and check fess-crawler.log. The crawler process takes its log level from this setting.
- Switch it back to warn afterwards, because DEBUG writes a lot of output.
Please also check these settings:
- Path: the File System crawl configuration’s path should look like smb://SERVER/SharedFolder/.
- File Authentication: under Crawler > File Authentication, set Scheme to SAMBA and Hostname to the same server name as in the path.
- Domain: enter the domain in the Parameters box as domain=YOURDOMAIN. The Fess documentation uses this format.
- File System config link: the authentication entry must be linked to your File System crawl configuration, using the “File System Config” selector on that screen.
- Permissions: the user needs read access to the share and its folders.
If it still returns nothing, please post the relevant part of fess-crawler.log (with the password removed).
