Make AI responses independent of browser locale

As described in this git issue, the current AI chat responses are prompted to be in the same language as the user’s browser locale.

That means that even if you for example ask English questions about English documents, you might get a response in Italian, because your browser is set to Italian. In many scenarios, that is a very useful feature that increases the user experience. Sometimes however, one might want to continue the conversation in e.g. English although the browser is set to a different language.

Are there plans to make this behavior configurable, for example by setting a parameter in fess_config.properties?

Thank you!

Thank you for the report and the clear proposal.

We have added a setting for this, and it will be available in Fess 15.9 (codelibs/fess#3527). It applies to all LLM plugins (OpenAI, Gemini and Ollama). In fess_config.properties:

# browser - answer in the browser/UI locale language (default, current behavior)
# none - add no language instruction; the LLM usually answers in the language of the question
# en, ja, ... - always answer in this language
rag.chat.response.language=none

For your case, none lets the conversation continue in English even when the browser is set to Italian. If you always want English, set it to en.
